Physical Education & Activity

Children Playing

Within The Kingfisher Schools Federation, Physical Education is an integral part of the total education of every child from Early Years through to Year 6.  Our P.E. provision is provided by both school staff and outside sports specialists.

Physical education is a statutory requirement of the National Curriculum and an essential contributor to the development of the whole child. Through a high quality Physical Education programme, pupils develop physical competence and confidence, and are given opportunities to become physically educated and physically literate.

The physical education provision will contribute to the personal development, health and well-being, enjoyment, success and achievement of all pupils across the whole curriculum and beyond. Physical education provides pupils with the opportunity to be creative, competitive and face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups.

The Kingfisher Schools Federation is committed to giving children the very best quality P.E. coaching and instruction. We therefore utilise the professional sport company, Premier Sports to deliver our curriculum P.E. as well as two sporting after school clubs, per week.

We aim to deliver high quality P.E. lessons for all children, developing their skills in dance, gymnastics and games. Extra-curricular sports and activity clubs will be offered during the course of the year, so that children have the opportunity to experience different sports and skills. Swimming will be provided by the county swimming service for children in Years 2 – 4 on a weekly basis during the summer term.

P.E. Premium Grant

We also receive PE Premium Funding from the Government, which must be spent on making additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of all pupils, to encourage their development, health and active lifestyles. Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer.

This means that we should use the premium to:

  • develop or add to the PE and sport activities that your school already offers;
  • make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years;
  • hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers;
  • provide existing staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively;
  • introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport;
  • support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs;
  • sport competitions;
  • increase pupils’ participation in school games;
  • run sports activities with other schools;

In recent years, The Kingfisher Schools Federation has invested in the development of sports activities for our pupils and training of teachers. We have used the PE & Sport Premium Grant to provide a wide range of curriculum sport, including tennis, basketball and gymnastics, amongst others.

The P.E. & Sport Premium Grant has also been used to transport our pupils to numerous Sports Tournaments in the locality, such as a Tennis and Netball Tournament at St. Felix School, Indoor Athletics at Water Lane Leisure Centre, a Swimming Gala at Water Lane Leisure Centre, a Football & Cricket Tournament at Ringsfield, as well as Kwik Cricket and Unihoc Tournaments at Sir John Leman High School.

Southwold Primary School and Barnby & North Cove Primary School also collaborate in yearly Sports Days, as well as having hosting Federation Tournaments each year.

Both schools have also been able to access external sport activities such as The Soft Play Kingdom at Lowestoft, the Waveney Gymnastic Club at Lowestoft and the Trowse Dry Ski Slope in Norwich.

We have also utilised the P.E. & Sport Premium Grant to purchase tennis equipment, a range of sport balls, a Traversing Wall at Southwold Primary School, a Fitness Trail and Tyre Park at Barnby & North Cove Primary School.

The P.E. & Sport Premium Grant has also been used to invested funds in the development and training of staff to raise the standards and spectrum of P.E. lessons in school and to offer after school clubs through local sports providers to encourage an active lifestyle outside of school.

You can find further information about how much funding we expect to receive in this year, together with how we intend to spend it, in our PE Premium Document, below.
